The Island of Ortigia

Ortucchio stands on the south-eastern edge of the Fucino plateau, 680 metres above sea level, in an open and luminous landscape dominated by the peaks of the Velino-Sirente massif. The village holds a thousand-year history: once an island — or a peninsula depending on the season — surrounded by the waters of Lake Fucino, which was the third-largest lake in Italy before it was drained in the nineteenth century.

Just a short walk from the motorhome area you will find the 1448 Piccolomini Castle, the natural lake of Ortucchio — the only surviving remnant of the ancient Lake Fucino — and the Sanctuary of Sant'Orante. The area is a gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the Sirente-Velino Regional Nature Park, offering hiking trails, cycling routes and unspoilt nature just a few kilometres away.

The Fucino Plain, visible in all its vastness from the motorhome area, is today one of the most fertile agricultural districts in Abruzzo, renowned for the IGP Fucino Potato and the IGP Fucino Carrot. Nearby stands the Fucino Space Centre "Piero Fanti" operated by Telespazio, with its 170 parabolic antennas: the largest civil teleport in the world, a fascinating contrast between ancient history and cutting-edge technology.

Within a few kilometres you can reach the medieval villages of Celano, Avezzano and Pescina, the Roman ruins of Alba Fucens, the prehistoric caves of Ortucchio and the mountain passes that come alive with hikers in summer and are blanketed in snow in winter. Staying in this area means having one of the most authentic and least-explored hearts of the central Apennines at your fingertips.
